Buying a home sauna is one of those purchases where the difference between a great decision and an expensive regret comes down to a handful of specs most brochures gloss over. Heat type, EMF, wood, electrical load, warranty fine print — get these right and you've got a 15-year wellness habit. Get them wrong and you've got a heavy wooden box that gathers laundry.

This guide walks you through the real decision criteria, honest numbers, and the questions that separate serious manufacturers from the flip-and-forget crowd.

First decision: infrared or traditional (or both)

This is the fork in the road, and neither is objectively "better" — they deliver different experiences.

Traditional (Finnish / electric or wood-fired):

  • Operating temperature: 150–195°F, with the option to pour water on the rocks for humidity ("löyly").
  • Heats the air, which heats you. Intense, enveloping, sweat-in-8-minutes heat.
  • Longer preheat: 30–45 minutes to reach temperature.
  • The "authentic" ritual most Scandinavians grew up with.

Infrared:

  • Operating temperature: 110–150°F. Feels milder because it warms your body directly rather than the air.
  • Preheat: 10–15 minutes.
  • Easier on people who find high air temps hard to breathe, and typically cheaper to run.
  • Comes in near, mid, and far infrared — more on that below.

Full-spectrum infrared combines near, mid, and far wavelengths. Near-infrared (700–1400 nm) is associated with skin and surface tissue; far-infrared (3000+ nm) produces the deep, sweaty warmth. If someone advertises "full spectrum," make sure it genuinely includes dedicated near-infrared emitters, not just a far-infrared panel with a marketing sticker.

Hybrid cabins run a traditional heater and infrared panels in the same room. Great if two people in your household disagree — but expect a higher price and a more demanding electrical setup.

Quick gut check: If you want ritual, steam, and blistering heat, go traditional. If you want quick, gentle, low-effort daily sessions, go infrared. If you can't decide and have the budget, hybrid.

The spec that gets ignored: EMF and ELF (infrared only)

Infrared heaters carry electrical current, and cheap ones can produce meaningful electromagnetic and electric fields right where your body sits for 40 minutes. This is the single most under-discussed spec in the category.

What to look for:

  • EMF under 3 mG at the point closest to your body — and the best manufacturers get well under 1 mG.
  • ELF (electric field) readings disclosed too, not just EMF. Many brands quietly ignore ELF.
  • Third-party test reports, not in-house claims. Ask to see the actual document with the testing lab named.

If a company can't or won't produce EMF/ELF test data measured at seat distance, treat that as a red flag. Low-EMF construction is a design cost — brands that skip it are usually cutting other corners too.

Heater technology and sizing

Traditional heaters are rated in kilowatts. The rule of thumb: roughly 1 kW per 45 cubic feet of cabin volume, adjusted up for glass walls or exterior installs. A typical 2–3 person indoor cabin needs a 6–8 kW heater. Undersized heaters never quite get there and run constantly; oversized ones cost more to install and run.

Infrared emitters come in two main flavors:

  • Carbon panels — larger surface area, gentle even heat, lower surface temperature.
  • Ceramic rods — hotter, more concentrated, faster to warm up.

Wood matters more than you'd think

Wood affects durability, smell, allergies, and whether the cabin off-gasses anything you'd rather not breathe at 140°F.

  • Western Red Cedar — naturally rot- and insect-resistant, aromatic, stable. The premium standard, especially for traditional saunas. Some people love the scent; a few find it strong.
  • Nordic Spruce — classic Scandinavian look, durable, mild scent.
  • Basswood / Poplar / Aspen — nearly odorless and hypoallergenic. Preferred for infrared cabins and anyone chemically sensitive.
  • Hemlock — affordable, neutral, common in entry-level infrared. Fine, but not premium.

The bigger issue is finishes and glues. In a heated cabin, low-grade adhesives and stained/sealed interiors can release VOCs. You want:

  • Interior wood that is untreated / unfinished.
  • Low-VOC or formaldehyde-free glues disclosed by the manufacturer.
  • Solid wood or reputable laminated panels, not thin veneer over particleboard.

Ask directly: "Is the interior wood unfinished, and what glues are used in the panels?" The answer tells you a lot.

Electrical requirements — check before you buy, not after

This trips up more buyers than anything else.

  • Small 1–2 person infrared: often plugs into a standard 120V, 15–20 amp outlet. Easy.
  • Larger infrared (3–4 person): may need a dedicated 20-amp circuit or a 240V connection.
  • Traditional electric heaters: almost always require a 240V hardwired dedicated circuit, often 30–40 amps for 6–8 kW units. That means an electrician and possibly a panel check.

Before you fall in love with a model, confirm:

1. Voltage and amperage required.

2. Whether it's plug-in or hardwired.

3. Whether your existing panel has capacity.

Budget $300–$800 for electrical work on a hardwired traditional unit — more if your panel needs an upgrade.

Certifications and safety

These aren't optional:

  • ETL, UL, or cETL listing for the full unit (not just the heater).
  • Overheat protection and an auto-shutoff timer.
  • For traditional heaters, a proper guardrail around the rocks and adequate clearances.
  • Tempered safety glass for any doors or windows.

If a listing shows only a component certification ("heater is UL listed") while the cabin itself is uncertified, that's a meaningful gap.

Size, ergonomics, and placement

Manufacturers love to overstate capacity. A "4-person" sauna often seats four people who really like each other. Plan realistically:

  • 1 person: roughly 36" × 36" footprint.
  • 2 person: ~48" × 42".
  • 3–4 person: ~60"+ × 48"+.

Also consider:

  • Bench depth — can you actually recline or sit cross-legged? 18–20" is comfortable.
  • Ceiling height — heat rises; 6'4"–6'8" interior is ideal.
  • Door swing and clearance in your chosen room.
  • Floor — infrared units are fine on most finished floors; traditional saunas with humidity benefit from tile or a moisture-tolerant base.
  • Ventilation — traditional saunas need intake and exhaust vents to circulate air. No vents is a red flag.

Weigh the shipping too: these units are 200–600+ lbs, often across multiple crates. Confirm delivery method (curbside vs. inside), and whether you'll need help maneuvering it.

Warranty and support — read the fine print

The word "lifetime" is doing a lot of work in this industry. Dig in:

  • What's covered separately? Heaters, electronics, and cabinetry often carry different terms.
  • Parts vs. labor — many "lifetime" warranties cover parts only, leaving you to pay a technician.
  • Residential vs. commercial terms differ; make sure you're reading the right one.
  • Who handles claims — the manufacturer directly, or a distributor who may vanish?
  • Parts availability — can you get a replacement heater or control board in 5 years?

A shorter warranty from a company that answers the phone beats a "lifetime" warranty from a brand you can't reach.

The 8 questions to ask before you buy

1. Is this infrared, traditional, or hybrid — and what's the actual operating temperature range?

2. (Infrared) What are the EMF and ELF readings at seat distance, and can I see the third-party report?

3. What wood is used, is the interior unfinished, and what glues are involved?

4. What's the heater type/wattage, and how many emitters — including for the back and calves?

5. What voltage and amperage does it require, and is it plug-in or hardwired?

6. Is the complete unit ETL/UL/cETL certified?

7. What exactly does the warranty cover — parts, labor, heater, electronics — and for how long?

8. How does it ship, how much does it weigh, and what's involved in assembly?

If a seller answers all eight clearly and in writing, you're dealing with a real one.
